OUR STORY
“We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.”
– Mahatma Gandhi

OUR REASON
AND OUR INSPIRATION
A random conversation between two colleagues struck common ground with the idea that a model sustainable community can catalyse the ordinary citizen to act and take responsibility for the role we each must play.
As professionals with over twenty-five years of experience in the energy sector of Trinidad and Tobago, we were both passionate about doing more to get other sectors of the economy on board with the inevitable energy transition. We understand the challenges of pushing against the grain and appreciate fully what lies ahead. But we also recognised the the housing sector for middle-income buyers had significant potential but was very much off the radar regarding their role in driving adoption of sustainable best practices.
We looked at the numbers - according to the Energy Chamber of T&T from - Residential power presently accounts for an estimated 35% of natural gas consumption used in power generation. Further “despite having 3 consumption categories at various prices, roughly 43% of all households in the country fell in the highest usage category of >1000 kWh.” Homes in T&T therefore “have a consumption level that is on par with the average North American home, twice that of the average European home and 3 times the global average.” Even more alarming, 15% of households use almost 50% of all residential power consumption.

We identified the main culprits and sought to target this group initially since the middle-income earner encompasses touchpoints of being consumers, investors, role models, organizational participants and citizens. They are therefore key to gaining buy-in and an inspiration for those coming behind.
